December 16, 2011

Dear Families,

We LOVED reading books about underwear this week.  The boys and girls enjoy giggling every time we said the word “underwear”.  They liked designing boxers after we read the book titled Underwear.  The kindergartners used unifix cubes to estimate how many cubes would fit in six different shapes.  After they guessed, the boys and girls found the actual answer.  The kindergartners made two more Christmas projects.  The students made Uu booklets.  More report card evaluations were done.  (Please practice your child’s birthday, address, and phone number!)  We talked about words, phrases, and sentences.

Don’t forget the Christmas party on Wednesday, December 21st.  Boys should bring a $2 gift for a boy, and girls should bring a $2 gift for a girl.  We do a fun number matching game to exchange the gifts.

School is dismissed early on Thursday, December 22nd.  The town students are dismissed at 2:20, and the bus students are dismissed at 2:25.  We students return on Tuesday, January 3rd.

Many kindergartners need new glue sticks.  Please check with your student to see if he/she needs a new one.  Mrs. Turner and Mrs. Daugherty do not have any more glue sticks to loan out.  We would love some extra glue sticks for the classroom to use!

We will be learning about the letter Zz next week.  Sharing for next week should be an item that starts with the letter Zz or an animal from the zoo.  Friday sharing students may bring their sharing item ANY DAY next week.

Time in kindergarten is going quickly!  Today was day number 80!  Wow!

December 9, 2011

Dear Families,

During Bb we visited Farmers Savings Bank.  Farmers Savings Bank gave each student a notepad, a coloring book, a pencil, and a tootsie roll.  We read Goldilocks and the Three Bears and acted the story out.  The kindergartners continued working on report card evaluations.  At home please practice your child’s address, phone number, birthday, counting to 50, days of the week in order, and sight and high frequency words.

Next week we will be studying the letter Uu. Since there are not many things that start with the letter Uu, your child may bring any Free choice item for sharing.

School is dismissed at 12:50 on Wednesday, December 14th.  The teachers get to attend many important meetings.

Many families are beginning to think about the elementary Christmas party and the gifts that the kids exchange.  We ask that the boys buy a gift for a boy and the girls buy a gift for a girl.  We will have a “grab bag” type of gift exchange.  The amount that can be spent on the gift is $2.  Boys and girls that want to donate any food or hygiene items to the local food pantry are welcome to bring those items into school, too. Our party has been scheduled for Wednesday, December 21st.

Our kindergarten parents in the past have been very generous when remembering the teachers at Christmas time.  An idea that we learned from Pied Piper is that instead of buying the teacher a gift, families could choose instead to purchase a gift for the room.  We have a few ideas for items that we would like for the classroom:  pencils, markers to be used in our writing center, glue sticks, stickers, baby dolls, doll clothing, a smaller and softer football, dry erase markers, monetary donations for different things in the room, and games or books (see the teachers for ideas).  If you need any ideas, just ask one of us.  Mrs. Turner made a Christmas tree wish list and hung it on the door if you would like to look at it.  Of course, families may handle this matter however they desire.

Also in regards to Christmas, the date for the elementary Christmas program is Thursday, December 15th.  It begins at 1:30 in the gym.  The fifth and sixth grade bands will play first, and the kindergartners will follow them. (There is an admission fee for the program!) Following our songs, families will have a choice of whether to have their kindergartner sit with them for the remainder of the program or watch the rest of it with Mrs. Turner and Mrs. Daugherty.

Because of the program on Thursday, the kindergartners will be getting new library books on Monday (Mrs. Turner’s blue team) and Tuesday (Mrs. Daugherty’s red group).

The kindergartners get to shop in the North Tama Holiday Gift Shop on Thursday, December 15th.  Items in the shop cost between 25¢ to $3 with most of the items costing $1 or less.  It is a family decision on whether your son or daughter participates in this opportunity.  It is a good time to talk about being a good consumer.  (If your child does not find something in the store that he/she wants to buy for gifts, then he/she can put the money back into his/her backpack and take it home.)  Since the items sold in the gift shop are donated to the store, there is no specific list of items available for families to discuss.
The North Tama FCCLA organization (formerly Future Homemakers of America) are hosting a party for all of the North Tama kindergartners on Friday, December 16th right after school in the FCS room (formerly known as the Home Ec room). Information was sent home this week!  If you have not turned in the form yet, DO SO BY MONDAY!  If your child cannot attend, please let us know that so that we aren’t badgering you about a permission slip.

Students will be dismissed one hour early on Thursday, December 22nd for the start of Christmas break.  We return to school on Tuesday, January 3rd.
Stay warm and enjoy the hustle and bustle of the holiday season!

December 2, 2011

Dear Families,

During Kk week we worked in journals two times.  The kindergartners wrote in their journals about what they liked doing in kindergarten and what they would do if they were kings.  We started doing report card evaluations.  The boys and girls colored and laced Christmas stockings that will be hung up on a bulletin board.  The stockings will go home before Christmas break.  The kindergartners colored and cut out shapes that they put together to make fish and other under the sea creatures and treasures.

Next week we will be studying the letter Bb. Please bring an item that starts with Bb for sharing.   Also next week we are going to go visit the Farmer’s Savings Bank to take a tour and see the jobs in a bank!

The boys and girls have started writing letters to Santa.  They are dictating their ideas to a teacher to be typed on the computer.  We would like them to have 3 or 4 ideas of gifts they would like to receive.  These letters will be mailed to Santa, and they may appear in the Traer Star Clipper.  Please discuss Christmas ideas with your child so that we can type these letters quickly and easily.  At the end of this week’s newsletter there is a form for families to fill out that will help us get these letters done without going too crazy.  Families also get to let Santa know how the boys and girls have been good/helpful at home. Some of our families have already turned these forms in, but we unfortunately do not have all of the forms back yet.  If you have already done this, please disregard.

Speaking of Christmas, many families are beginning to think about the elementary Christmas party and the gifts that the kids exchange. November 23, 2011

Dear Families,

During Rr week we worked really, really hard on reading.  We do not have any new flashcards this week.  Over break please read the booklets we have already sent home and practice the flashcards.  We read the book Red Fox and His Canoe and acted it out.  The kindergartners learned about the first Thanksgiving and read many Thanksgiving books.  Mrs. Daugherty showed an informational FILMSTRIP about Thanksgiving.  (How many of you remember that piece of equipment?  Even old technology has a use in kindergarten!)

Next week we will be studying the letter Kk. Please bring an item that starts with Kk for sharing.

Right after Thanksgiving the boys and girls will be writing letters to Santa.  They will be dictating their ideas to a teacher to be typed on the computer.

November 18, 2011

Dear Families,

During Ff week we learned about fish and reviewed fall.   Fall booklets were read in class, colored, and brought home.  There are 2 pages of homework at the back of those booklets.  If your child completes those pages, then a sticker can be earned.  The kindergartners learned about frogs and how they grow from eggs to adult frogs.

Next week we will be studying the letter Rr. Since next week is so short, we will NOT be having sharing.

On Monday, November 21st Mrs. Turner’s blue team will be getting new books at media time.  On Tuesday, November 22nd Mrs. Daugherty’s red team will be getting new books.  This is a change from our normal schedule so please be prepared!

Right after Thanksgiving the boys and girls will be writing letters to Santa.  They will be dictating their ideas to a teacher to be typed on the computer.  We would like them to have 3 or 4 ideas of gifts they would like to receive.  These letters will be mailed to Santa, and they may appear in the Traer Star Clipper.  Please discuss Christmas ideas with your child so that we can type these letters quickly and easily.  In next week’s newsletter there will be a form for families to fill out that will help us get these letters done without going too crazy.  Families also get to let Santa know how the boys and girls have been good/helpful at home.

We know that the cold and flu season is upon us.  Please remember that if your doctor prescribes a medication that has to be taken at school, THE DOCTOR and THE PARENT (yes both) need to write the directions down for the nurse.  (This means 2 notes are required.)  The prescription medication MUST be in the original container from the pharmacy.  Families might want to ask for 2 containers when filling the prescription; one for school and one for home.  The nurse cannot administer any medication without both notes.  Cough syrup needs to have a doctor’s order to be given in school.  (If your child is constantly coughing, he/she should really stay home.)  DO NOT SEND COUGH DROPS TO SCHOOL WITH YOUR STUDENT!  Parents are welcome to come to school and give medicines to their own children.  Please contact the school nurse or us if you have any questions.

November 11, 2011

Dear Families,

While studying the letter Ss we learned about spiders and sharks.  The kindergartners pretended that some Super Socks gave them special powers.  In their journals they told the teachers what super powers the Super socks gave them.   The kindergartners learned the following blends this week: sl, st, sn, sp sm, and spl.  The boys and girls have 5 new flashcards.  These high frequency words can be sounded out, but reading is easier if they can remember it quickly without having to sound them out each time. Cut these flashcards apart and practice them OFTEN!

Next week we will be studying the letter Ff.  For sharing please send something that starts with the letter Ff.

Check with your kindergartner to see if the glue stick needs to be replaced.

Thanksgiving is coming up!  The students are dismissed at 2:20 on Wednesday, November 23rd.  There will be no school on Thursday, November 24th or Friday, November 25th.

Because of a Professional Development Day on Wednesday, November 16th, the children do not have school.

As the weather starts turning colder we must think about boots, snowpants, hats, mittens, and coats.  Please make sure that your child is prepared for cold, wet weather.  Please put your child’s name in every piece of outerwear brought to school.

Have a nice weekend!

November 4, 2011

Dear Families,

This week the kindergartners worked with the letter Ii.  We read The Icky Bug Book and made a list of things we thought were “icky”.  We wrote in our journals ways we can be trustworthy students at school.  We switched the fall walk to Tuesday because of the weather forecast on Wednesday.  The kindergartners drew a person, and the teachers kept the paper and put it in the students’ portfolios.  Mrs. Turner taught us how to make homemade ice cream! Please notice the colored flashcards that are included with this packet.  The word to is a sight word that the students just need to memorize.  The other words are high frequency words that the boys and girls can sound out.  Practice reading the little booklets and reviewing flashcards often.  That really helps kindergartners learn and remember, making reading easier and more fun.

Next week we will be studying the letter Ss.  Sharing next week is something that starts with the letter Ss in a secret sack.  Please prepare clues for your child to say at school during sharing time.  The clues can be written down if you desire.

We have noticed that some of the boys and girls are still in need of new crayons.  You may replace them with boxes of 16 or 24 crayons.  Check with your kindergartner to see if the glue stick needs to be replaced also.

The kindergarten newsletter can now be found on the web!  Go to northtamak11.blogspot.com to see any important information or copies of the newsletters.

October 28, 2011

Dear Families,

During this week we worked with the letter Mm.  We sorted and graphed M & M’s.  We read the big book The Mitten and acted it out.  The kindergartners also worked with opposites with The Mitten, practiced retelling the story using the proper sequence, and did some fun math problems using the characters from the story.  Mercer Mayer books were read throughout the week.  The kindergartners practiced some Halloween songs that we sang at the Traer Nursing Home.

Next week we are studying the letter Ii.  Sharing for next week will be free choice.

Next week we will be taking a fall walk on Wednesday afternoon at about 2:30.  Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for this walk.

A great place to stop while trick-or-treating is the Traer Nursing home.  Boys and girls can receive a lot of goodies and enjoy walking around without coats.  Check out the Traer Star Clipper for the times to visit the nursing home.  (We think that children can trick-or-treat from 6:30 - 7:30 at the nursing home.)

Please write your child’s name on coats, snowpants, boots, hats and mittens.  With over 30 children in this room, winter items can get mixed up and having names on the clothing is extremely helpful.

Kindergartners may now bring a new box of crayons to school.  The new box of crayons may contain 16 or 24 crayons.  A few students need new glue sticks also.

We continued to work on report cards this week.  The report cards go home on Monday, October 31st.
The North Tama Redhawk football team continues to win, and they play again on Monday, October 31st.

Keep practicing those flashcards and reading at home!  Every bit of practice at home really helps!

October 21, 2011

Dear Families,

During Nn week we practiced our numbers and made Number Booklets.  Phone numbers were practiced.  (Boys and girls will need to know their phone numbers for the second report card.)  Some North Tama football players came in and talked about football.  They brought in some of their cool equipment for the kindergartners to see and touch.  We worked really hard on evaluations for the first quarter report card.  Report cards may go home on October 31st.

Attached to the newsletter are 3 new flashcards!  Cut them apart and add them to last week’s flashcards.  Reviewing the flashcards with the kindergartners is very beneficial!  The more practice, the better readers they become!

Next week we will be studying the letter Mm.  Kindergartners need to bring something that begins with the letter Mm for sharing.

Please remember that our Halloween party is on Friday, October 28th.  The kindergartners may BRING their costumes to school that day.  After the big recess we get dressed up and then travel to the nursing home by bus.  When we return we will do some Halloween activities in the room, parade through the classrooms, and enjoy Halloween snacks.

The weather is getting cooler outside, and we try to go outside at LEAST 1 time a day for recess if it is not raining.  Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather because he/she will go outside whether or not they have the necessary clothing.   Remember that if there is measurable snow on the ground, the boys and girls need boots.

We are now warning our families that the school is keeping our thermostats at 68 degrees this winter.  Some students may find this temperature a little chilly.  We recommend that you send a sweatshirt or sweater to school with your child everyday.  They can keep it in their backpacks or cubbies and wear it when they feel cold.

Please make sure that your child has an extra set of clothing in their school bag.  Kindergartners have bathroom accidents, lunch tray spills, illnesses that soil clothing, and dirty recess catastrophes every now and then, and they feel more comfortable in their own clothing, especially underwear.  We do have some extra clothing here, but it is a lot easier to get extra clothing out of school bags than it is to dig out clothing they will wear out of our supply.

Some children are beginning to arrive to school before 8:10.  If the children are not eating breakfast, then they need to wait on the playground for the 8:10 bell unless your family has talked to the teachers.  Teachers are not always in the classrooms because we are making final arrangements for the day, and we do not like to leave the kindergartners unsupervised.  We realize that clocks at home are set at different times, and that occasionally children get here early.  If you bring your kindergartner and you discover that you are a couple of minutes early, you can wait in our little entryway for the 8:10 bell.

Today was our last day with our student teacher, Ms. Michelle Davis.  The kindergartners LOVED working with her and will miss her very much.  Ms. Davis will be student teaching in fourth grade at South Tama starting next Monday.

We hope you have an absolutely great weekend!

Mrs. Daugherty, Ms. Davis, and Mrs. Turner

October 14, 2011

Dear Families,

What an active week we have had!  We had fun talking fire safety and we all practiced stop, drop, and roll and earned a certificate.  (Many of the children expressed interest in practicing fire drills at home.)  On Monday, Martin Herker and several volunteers brought the Traer ambulance up to the school so that the children could see it, and on Wednesday, the Traer Fire Department brought in their equipment.  They told the students about their jobs and informed them about the equipment they would use if someone were sick or hurt.  The apples brought from home were compared, and the different colors of apples were tasted.  The boys and girls made a big graph while voting for their favorite kind of apple (red, green, or yellow).  The graph is hanging in the hallway.

This week the kindergartners brought home a little booklet about fire safety.  For homework families can read these booklets and do the activity pages at the end of these booklets.  Kindergartners that bring the finished booklets back will get to pick out a sticker. Kindergartener’s will also be bringing home a worksheet to practice writing their phone numbers.

Next week we will be studying the letter Nn.  Sharing should be an item that starts with Nn.

We will be having our Halloween party on Friday, October 28th at 2:15.  We will be going to Sunrise Hill Care Center for a costume parade around 1:00 that same day.  We will also sing many cute Halloween songs to the residents.  Children should BRING their costume to school that day, NOT wear it to school.  The less help they need from adults the better.  (i.e. makeup)  We have already sent notes to those volunteers that will need to send treats, napkins, or help at the party.  We had so many wonderful volunteers that we ended up drawing names!

Parents who were informed at conferences about their child needing new glue sticks may send some at any time if they have not done so already. Also, please remember to send boxes of 16 or 24 crayons for your student if you have not already done so. PLEASE DO NOT SEND BIGGER BOXES!  That is too many crayons for our baggies.

We have already been evaluating the children for their report cards.  We will be checking the students on knowing their addresses, colors, shapes, left/right, days of the week, birthdays, and identifying the numbers 0 - 10.  The children will also be expected to correctly count objects up to 10. Report cards will be sent home on October 31st.

Please continue sending coats, jackets, and sweatshirts to school everyday.  The weather is getting colder, and the recesses have been chillier.  We’d rather have the children get a little warm than shiver through the recesses.  We would also like to remind you to send extra clothes with your child to school.  The children feel more comfortable in their own clothes if they would happen to need to change them.  We would greatly appreciate if borrowed clothes from the kindergarten room would be returned.

We are sending home a list of all of the SIGHT words we learn this year.  This list does NOT include all of the high frequency words that we also learn.  Notice the lesson number for each word.  You will see when we introduce each new SIGHT word.  Do not freak out and think that your child needs to know all of these words right now.

You will notice some flashcards attached to the newsletter.  Please cut these apart and practice them often!  More will go home most weeks until we have learned all 82 kindergarten sight and high frequency words!

Have a fantastic fall-type weekend!

Dear Families,

This week we explored the letter Pp. We learned about the Presidents.  We graphed our favorite pet.  The children could choose one of the following pets: dog, cat, fish, rabbit, or hamster/gerbil/guinea pig.

We also started working in our journals with a “My favorite pet is…” worksheet. On Friday, we were excited to participate in a school wide “Start Somewhere Iowa” walk. As we walked, we were able to enjoy the nice weather and the fun fall colors.

Next week we will be learning about the letter Aa.  Next week’s sharing will be free choice since there aren’t many items that begin with the letter Aa.  During Aa week we talk about apples. Each kindergartner needs to bring in one apple for some different apple activities.  We need these apples by Wednesday, October 12th! Also, students who have not yet brought new crayons of 16-24 or replacement glue sticks may do so at any time next week. We are all excited to have so many new options when coloring.

Remember that picture day is Tuesday, October 11th.  Kindergartners are normally scheduled to get their pictures taken at 8:20 SO PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOUR CHILD IS AT SCHOOL ON TIME!  (Bus students will not have a problem with this.)  If you have special instructions concerning hair or smiles, write us a note, and we will do our best to help your student take a great picture.  Children are welcome to change out of special picture outfits when pictures are finished.

Around this time of year the weather gets cooler.  We try to go outside for recess everyday, and the boys and girls need to be dressed appropriately.  (Some of the children don’t want to wear their coats outside on a chilly day.  On chilly days we make them wear coats or sweatshirts.)  We have them wear whatever the family sends them in.  By the way, one rule our school has is if there is any measurable snow on the ground, the students need to wear boots outside.  We know that the thought of snow is depressing, but we wanted you to be aware and prepared.

The flu and cold season is coming soon (if it is not already here)!  According to our elementary handbook, children need to stay home if they have the following: an earache, severe headache, a fever of 99.6 or above, an acute cold, a communicable disease, mattering or an inflammation of the eyes, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or untreated head lice.  In the handbook there are also guidelines that will help families determine if a child may return to school.  Please refer to this so that children do not come back to school too early.

Remember that on Friday, October 28th, the boys and girls are currently scheduled to have the Halloween parties. Students are allowed to wear their costumes during the party, but will need regular clothes for the rest of the day. Please do not send your student in their costume that morning. At 1:00 Friday, October 28, we will be traveling to the nursing home to show off our costumes and sing some songs. We will be changing into our costumes at 12:30.

September 30, 2011

Dear Families,

We worked with the alphabet and enjoyed reading the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin, Jr.  We made a chart using the first letter of our names, to see what letters had the most first names and which letters had the fewest.  We read a lot of alphabet books, too.  We played an alphabet freeze game.  The kindergartners danced and moved around until the music stopped.  Then they found a letter on the floor close to where they were frozen, picked it up, and told everyone the name of the letter.  We learned about the letter Tt.  Teeth and dental care was discussed.  We know that adults are supposed to have 32 teeth and that brushing gets the “sugar bugs” off of the teeth.  Healthy food is better for your teeth than sugary foods.  Visiting the dentist is important for good dental health.  Attached to the newsletter are 2 extra homework papers.  One is a tooth brushing chart.  Every child that brushes his/her teeth 2 times a day, fills out the chart with a check mark or smiley face or parent’s signature in each box, and returns it gets a special certificate from the Tooth Fairy.  The other paper will need some parental guidance to help fill in the blanks.

This week we worked with counting coconuts.  Each child was given a bag with one coconut tree and ten coconuts.  The students learned to add more coconuts when they needed a larger number and take a way coconuts when they needed a smaller number.  They can use these to practice counting at home.

This week we also began practicing writing names the kindergarten way.  Next week we will continue practicing.  We will expect them to write their name the kindergarten way on all their papers.  Reinforcement at home is greatly appreciated.  Remember, if your kindergartner practices writing at home, and they bring the paperwork in, they can earn a sticker.

Next week we will be studying the letter Pp.  Sharing next week should be one item that begins with the letter Pp.  The Monday sharing kids may bring their sharing any day next week since we do NOT have school on Monday!

Halloween is fast approaching, and many families are beginning to think about their child’s costume.  The elementary has a policy about costumes.  We do not allow any blood or weapons with the costumes.  Right now the Halloween parties are scheduled for October 31st.

Don’t forget about October 11th! We will be having our pictures taken on this day. You will receive the order forms soon. Please try to have these forms returned before picture day. On Tuesday, October 11th, the kindergartners need to be here by 8:20.  (Bus students are always on time.)  We are usually the first class to have pictures taken, and they come for us around 8:20.  If you want your child to change out of the picture clothing, please send another outfit.  If you have special instructions concerning hair, jewelry, or outfits, please write us a note with the directions.

The kindergartners may bring new crayons!  Please send boxes of 24 crayons to school.  Please do NOT send boxes with more than 24 crayons because we do not have room for bigger boxes!

One last important date to note is the Christmas program. It will be on December 15th at 1:30 p.m.

Have a great fall weekend!

Friday, September 23, 2011

Dear Families,

This week we discussed seasons and the weather. We made lists of summer words, fall words, winter words, and spring words.  These lists were written on seasonal symbols and hung in the hallway.  We took an “end of summer” walk to look at the trees, flowers, grass, etc.  (If the weather didn’t cooperate, we didn’t go on the walk.)  We talked about how the trees are still full of green leaves.  We noticed that some of the leaves are already turning colors, and some have even fallen off the trees.  The kindergartners talked about how the trees change for each season.  They made trees to show the four different seasons.  The kindergartners enjoyed painting the trunks brown.  Have them tell you about how the trees change for each season.

We also spent the week getting to know a new author, Kevin Henkes. He has written many popular books such as Lilly’s Big Day and Kitten’s First Full Moon, which has won a Caldecott Medal for its amazing illustrations.

A couple of weeks ago the kindergarten students participated in the DIBELS Benchmark Assessment.  We had several different people working with our students on this evaluation.  We will share these evaluations with you at your fall conference.
This Thursday, the 22nd, was our first tornado drill of the year. We practiced going quickly down the hall to the bathrooms and sitting quietly with our heads covered so that we will know what to do to stay safe in an emergency.

Please remember that each Thursday the kindergartners get a new library book.  If your child forgets to return the book that day, the teachers will try to get them to the library for a new book as soon as they can. It may NOT be the very day theirs is returned due to our busy schedule.

We hope your child is enjoying kindergarten.  Things are slowly improving!  Have a great weekend!

September 16, 2011

Dear Families,

Senses were discussed this week.  Monday the five senses were introduced, and the students watched a video about the 5 senses that came with a catchy song.  On Monday the sense of hearing was discussed. Each child was asked to listen for special things at home. We also talked about the sense of touch and sight. Each child was able feel a mystery object in a special box and guess what the object was.  They played a game that required them to look at a group of objects, remember what the objects are, and guess the object the teacher took away when their eyes were closed.  Friday was a “smelly” and “tasty” day, the boys and girls guessed mystery smells as well as tasted something sweet (m and m’s), sour (dill pickles), salty (pretzels), and bitter (unsweetened baking chocolate).  Also this week the kindergartners worked on sequencing, remembering the details of a story, and the letter Gg.  Lowercase g is harder to make so we made a practice homework paper and attached it to the newsletter.  The kindergartners talked about ways to be safe at school, at home, on the farm, and in our community.

This week we began reading books about Curious George.  The children really enjoy these books.  We have discussed the meaning of the word curious,  and the children have thought of a few things they are each curious about.  You can read your child’s ideas on the windows outside our room.

Next week we will be learning about the 4 seasons.  On Friday morning we hope to take an end of summer walk.  Please dress your child appropriately.

Sharing for next week is an item in a “secret sack” from your child’s favorite season.  Your kindergartner needs to be able to give clues about the mystery item.  You are welcome to help your child with the clues.  Families may also write the clues down on a piece of paper so that if your student forgets them, we can help him/her.  For example, if your child’s favorite season is summer, the sharing item could be a swimming suit.  The child puts the swimming suit into a sack (or the backpack).  Clues could include: I wear this when it is hot.  I like to get it wet.  It is purple and green.  The other students will then get to try and guess what is in the sack.

Students that bring soft and cuddly items get to sleep with them during rest time.  However we do NOT want your child to bring a soft and cuddly item EVERY WEEK just so they can sleep with a soft and cuddly item.

Again this year we are collecting Box Tops for Education  box tops.  Send in the box top that has that special logo on it.  Each box top is worth 10¢.  The school is also collecting Campbell's soup labels.  Send any that you have to school with your child.  The elementary school is also collecting Hy-Vee receipts.  If you know anyone that shops at Hy-Vee, ask him or her for their receipts.  The school gets $1 for every $200 turned in!  Empty Capri Sun juice pouches are being collected this year.  We get 6¢ for each one.

The weather will be getting cooler.  We recommend that families send jackets or sweatshirts to school.  It would be very helpful if the coats had names written in them.  Many times they fall on the floor, and the teachers do not know whom they belong to, and occasionally 2 children have identical coats.  Having names written on the coats helps the children identify theirs.

Please put extra clothes in your child’s backpack or in a sack that we can hang on their cubby hooks.  Boys and girls spill milk, slide in mud, get bloody noses, and have bathroom accidents that require changing clothes.  We do NOT have a lot of extra clothes for boys and girls to borrow, and we would rather not call you at work to bring in extra clothes.

September 9, 2011

Dear Families,

This week we continued to review the school and classroom rules and procedures.  We also continued to read books about the beginning of school.  We worked on colors with the book Brown Bear, Brown Bear.  We hope your child will share their similar book with you.  We read a big book called All About You, and we learned more about each other.  We talked about families and body graphed how many people were in our families.  Patterning with our bodies was a fun activity we tried this week.  An example was standing, sitting, standing, sitting.  The students were getting really good at figuring out the patterns.  In reading we worked with the letter Oo.  There is more Oo homework that families may work on.  Check out the paper attached to the newsletter!

Breakfast begins at 8:00.  Children eating breakfast should not come into the school until 8:00.  Other students may come in at 8:10.  If your child arrives too early, we will send him/her out to the playground.

We will begin sharing the week of September 12th.  The kindergarten student needs to bring an item that starts with the letter Gg.  A list of September topics will be at the end of the newsletter.  (Please keep the sharing portion of the newsletter so that you can refer to the sharing list each week.)  Your child needs to be able to tell about the sharing item in front of the class.  Your child is assigned a sharing day.  The kindergartners need to remember to bring their sharing on their assigned day.  If a child forgets the sharing item, he/she may not bring it another day.  If your kindergartner is gone on their sharing day, then he/she needs to bring their sharing item on the day they come back to school.

During the month of September the entire elementary is working on the CHARACTER COUNTS! characteristic of responsibility.  We will be demonstrating responsibility in different situations and praising those that show responsibility during the day.  Families are encouraged to work on responsibility at home!

Parents are welcome to volunteer in our classroom.  Soon we will be reading little books with each child individually each week.  This takes a lot of time!  We also do weekly reading evaluations.  There are times that we need things cut out or put together.  If you would like to set up a time to volunteer, let us know!

We hope that your child is enjoying school!  Have a super weekend!!

Mrs. Turner, Ms. Davis, and Mrs. Daugherty

Dear Families,

The breakfast bell rings at 8:00, and kids eating breakfast are allowed in the building then.  Other students should not come in until 8:10.  If your child does not ride the bus, and he/she arrives early, he/she should go to the playground.

THERE IS NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 5TH.  THAT IS LABOR DAY!

Along with learning the many important school rules, we have worked on shapes, colors, and following directions.  On Friday we reviewed shapes by taking a “Shape Walk.”  (If the weather was inclement, we had to skip the outside walk.)  We looked at buildings, cars, and natural items and discussed the shapes found in them.  We then returned to class and made our own shape creatures and items using colorful shapes, glue sticks, and crayons.

Most days we do some kind of math work.  The boys and girls will bring home worksheets that have “homework” on one side.  We want families to look at these math worksheets and work with your kindergartner on the homework side.  Children that do their homework and return the paper to school get to pick out a sticker from the sticker box.  Families may also send a note stating that their kindergartner has done their homework.

The kindergartners are using the Saxon Reading Program.  We learn how to write each capital and lowercase letter of the alphabet.  The children learn a keyword for each letter and the sound the letter makes.  Worksheets go home most days to show families what we are working on.  This week we started learning about the letter Ll.  During the week we discussed living and nonliving things and read the big book Lions and Gorillas.  The boys and girls made their own Lions and Gorillas booklets.  It is a repetitive story that has an animal in the jungle, then at the zoo, and then somewhere in their house.

Each week we learn about a new letter.  Attached to the newsletter is a poem that goes with the letter Ll.  As homework, parents should read the poem to the kindergartner.  Then the student can circle all of the Ll’s.  There are other homework ideas.  You can choose to do one, two, or three of the homework activities.  Kids that return this homework may pick out a sticker.  Each week you will be getting a new poem and new homework ideas.

Library books need to be returned every Thursday in order to get a new one.

Lunch has gone well with the majority of students being willing to try new or unfamiliar foods.  We will not make the children eat all of the food on their plate, but we will encourage them to try each food and then eat enough to get them through the afternoon. If your child needs to buy a milk to drink because they brought their own lunch, then 37 cents will be subtracted from your family’s hot lunch account.

During our full days of school we have rest time.  We try to rest about 15 - 20 minutes Tuesdays through Fridays.   We feel rest time is important and necessary.  We are playing soft, relaxing music and the lights are off.

Don’t forget!  Every Friday is Spirit Friday!  Children are encouraged to wear red, white, or Redhawk shirts.

Please remember that we DO have school on Friday, September 30th, and we do NOT have school on Monday, October 3rd.

We look forward to another week of school with this enjoyable group of children!  We know that things will improve and run more smoothly each day!

Dear Families,

We have made it through 5 days of school.  We are still adjusting to our classroom routines, classroom rules, and school rules.  Things get better and less hectic each day!

Kindergarten newsletters are sent home every week.  They normally go home on Fridays so please be sure that you check in your child’s folder for this important information.  We tell you about what we have done in school, and we try to give you advanced warning on the upcoming kindergarten and school events.  It is advised that you check your child’s folder EVERYDAY and take out the papers we have completed.

The breakfast bell rings at 8:00, and kids eating breakfast are allowed in the building then.  Other students should not come in until 8:10.  If your child does not ride the bus, and he/she arrives early, he/she should go to the playground.

Some children do not have all of their school supplies here yet.  If you have not sent gym shoes, a paint shirt, markers, etc. please send them ASAP!

Along with learning the many important school rules, we have started worked on shapes, colors, and following directions.  We will continue to work on these next week.  On Friday next week we hope to take a “Shape Walk.”  (If the weather is inclement, we will have to skip the outside walk.)  We will look at buildings, cars, and natural items and discuss the shapes found in them.  When we return to class we will make our own shape creatures and items using colorful shapes, glue sticks, and crayons.

Most days we do some kind of math work.  The boys and girls will bring home worksheets that have “homework” on one side.  The homework might be as simple as make the number in the air.  We want families to look at these math worksheets and work with your kindergartner on the homework side.  Parents can sign the paper and send it back to show they worked on it together.  Children that do their homework and return the paper to school get to pick out a sticker from the sticker box.  Families may also send a note stating that their kindergartner has done their homework.

This year the kindergartners are using the Saxon Reading Program.  We will learn how to write each capital and lowercase letter of the alphabet.  The children will learn a keyword for each letter and the sound the letter makes.  Worksheets will go home most days to show families what we are working on.  Next week we will start learning about the letter Ll.  We will be doing many different Ll activities.  Each week we learn about a new letter.

If your child needs to buy a milk to drink because they brought their own lunch, then 37 cents will be subtracted from your family’s hot lunch account.

During most of our full days of school we have rest time.  We try to rest about 20 - 30 minutes each day.   We feel rest time is important and necessary.  We are playing soft, relaxing music and the lights are off.

Our classroom schedule was sent home this week in the Back to School Night packet found at your child’s table spot.  Look at this schedule carefully so that you can help your child dress appropriately for the day.  Sharing is on this schedule.  We have not started sharing yet.  We will let you know when sharing will start.

Don’t forget, we will not have school on Monday, September 5th.  We get out of school one hour early on Friday September 2nd.  Town kids are dismissed at 2:20 and bus kids are dismissed at 2:25.

Due to Homecoming on Friday, September 30th, we WILL have school on that day.  We were supposed to have the day off, but now we have moved the day off to Monday, October 3rd.  Please fix your school calendars!

Mr. Cue, our new superintendent, really believes in school spirit.  Every Friday he is encouraging the staff and the students to wear our school colors (red and white) or Redhawk clothing.

This year Mrs. Daugherty and Mrs. Turner are trying to keep copies of the newsletter on the internet!  The address is http://northtamak11.blogspot.com.  Families may add this address to the home computer’s bookmarks or favorites areas.  You can also find a link to this blogspot by going to the North Tama web page.  The North Tama web page can be found at www.n-tama.k12.ia.us.

Please have your child sign the contract that you received at the Back to School Night.  You will also need to sign it and return it to school.  This paper says that the teacher, the student, and the parents will work to the best of their abilities during the school year so the student can learn to their fullest potential.

If you need to contact Mrs. Daugherty, you may call her at home at 478-2844 or you may use the following email addresses: kdaugherty@n-tama.k12.ia.us. Mrs. Turner may be reached at school at 478-2265 or at the following email address: aturner@n-tama.k12.ia.us.

On Monday Michelle Davis will get to join our classroom as a student teacher.  She is attending Buena Vista and will be with us through most of October.

We look forward to another week of school with this enjoyable group of children!  We know that things will improve and run more smoothly each day!

August 22, 2011 - The First Day of School

I had a good first day of school!   The day went by very quickly!   If I couldn't come to school last Thursday evening, Mrs. Turner and Mrs. Daugherty helped me put my school supplies in the right places, and they told me where I would be sitting for the first nine weeks of school.  Please ask me to tell you my table number.   We talked about the rules we have in our class that help things run smoothly for everyone.  These rules are written on the next page, and the teachers would like you to read them over with me.

Today we attended a Welcome to School assembly in the big gym, worked in our room, went outside for recesses, and ate lunch. We learned a couple of action fingerplays and listened to some stories about the first day of school.  We wrote our names on a paper for our teachers to save until the end of kindergarten so we can see our improvement.   Here is how I wrote my name.

Mrs. Turner and Mrs. Daugherty have several more important things to tell you about my kindergarten class.  They want you to watch for the notes I'll be bringing home during the school year.  They also say to feel free to send a note or call if you have any questions or concerns.
Please make sure that you fill out the volunteer form and the emergency number form if you haven’t already.  This information is very important to my teachers!  Remember, there are many times throughout the year that they can use extra help in the classroom.

It is also very important to send a note if I am to leave school with someone different, or if I am to go somewhere other than where I normally go.

I think kindergarten will be a fun place to learn!
I bet you can't believe I 'm really old enough to be in school now!
