Dear Families,

Next week is round up week.  DO NOT SEND YOUR KINDERGARTNER TO SCHOOL!

This week the kindergartners learned that c and h together make the sound “ch” and ee says the long e sound. The students reviewed dimes and other coins.  On Tuesday, Rebecca Hosek helped the children plant zinnia seeds and taught them about soil and seeds.  On Wednesday the boys and girls attended the Ronald McDonald assembly.  Ronald had a good message about how each person is unique and special.  Ronald also talked about bullying and gave us ways to deal with bullies.  We practiced sequencing.  The kindergartners filled in the missing letters on an alphabet worksheet.  On Friday we picked up garbage on the playground and football field area. (weather permitting)

Next week is round up week.  DO NOT SEND YOUR KINDERGARTNER TO SCHOOL!

Please check with your kindergartner on the condition of his/her pencils at school.  Some really need to be replaced!  Some pencils need to be replaced by families because the eraser is worn down or the pencil is too short. Please send pencils with erasers on them so that if your student makes a mistake he/she can easily erase it.

Next week is round up week.  DO NOT SEND YOUR KINDERGARTNER TO SCHOOL!

When we return from the round up vacation, sharing will be free choice.

Next week is round up week.  DO NOT SEND YOUR KINDERGARTNER TO SCHOOL!

The kindergartners continue to work with the green, yellow, and right light system.  We start every day on green.  (Green is great!)  If the class is loud or isn’t following directions as a group, the green will turn to yellow.  (Yellow is a warning.)  If the boys and girls work hard and begin listening and following directions we can move back to a green.  If they do not, we move to red.  (Red is BAD!)  If the kindergartners get to red, they eat snack silently.  If they get two in a day, they eat snack silently AND put their heads down on their tables for a few minutes. Our goal again is to have 5 days in a row without any YELLOWS.  Check with your kindergartner on how close we are to reaching the new goal.  Recently our classroom has been noisier because the students are chatting with their friends during work time and in line basics.

Next week is round up week.  DO NOT SEND YOUR KINDERGARTNER TO SCHOOL!

Please put extra socks in your student’s backpack.  Kids that wear sandals and flip flops to school like to wear socks with their gym shoes to p.e.

Next week is round up week.  DO NOT SEND YOUR KINDERGARTNER TO SCHOOL!

Round up week will be April 30th – May 4th.  Kindergarten students stay home that week so that we can get to know the future kindergartners.

VIP Days (formerly known as Grandparent Days) have been scheduled for May 10th and 11th.  Your child gets to invite special guests to come to school and watch a short program in the classroom, enjoy a special snack, and check out our room and school.  Students may invite grandparents and/or special friends to attend.  We encourage students to invite people other than parents if that is possible.  If no other guests available, then parents are welcome to be the guests.  We CANNOT accommodate all of the kindergarten parents AND the special guests in our classroom.  The guests choose which day they will attend.  Invitations were decorated last week.  If you need more invitations, please let us know.  Fill out the rsvp note that is at the bottom of this newsletter if you haven’t already done so.  Families will need to fill that note out and send it back to school so that we have enough chairs and snacks ready!
Next week is round up week.

DO NOT SEND YOUR KINDERGARTNER TO SCHOOL!

Enjoy the extra time that you have with your kindergartner!

Dear Families,

This week the kindergartners learned about that sneaky silent e at the end of words that makes the vowels say their names.  They are excited to code more words, and they are noticing vowel – consonant – e words in their Daily 5 books.  Since Earth Day is on Sunday, we read books about Earth Day and made posters that told different ways we can help save the earth.  The boys and girls decorated VIP Days invitations.  Each child decorated two.  If your family needs more than 2, please let us know and we will give you more.  Notice the RSVP slip at the bottom of the newsletter.  Please fill this out and send it back as soon as you can so that we know how many treats to make and how many chairs to reserve for this event.

Five of the chicks have stayed in the classroom while the other ten chicks went home to Ryan Hosek’s house.  It is amazing how quickly the chicks grow and change. Check out the kindergarten blog for pictures.  The address is http://northtamak11.blogspot.com.  You can also find a link called Kindergarten News on the Elementary portion of the North Tama website.
The kindergartners continued Daily 5 this week.  The boys and girls worked through each Daily 5 center everyday we were able to schedule Daily 5. Because of our crazy schedule, some days we worked in the centers longer than others. Many of the kindergartners are becoming more independent readers and writers.  For many, Daily 5 makes the morning or the afternoon go by really quickly!  The students LOVE learning how to read and write new words.

During Daily 5 the boys and girls have enjoyed going to the Traer Public Library to use the TumbleBooks.  TumbleBooks read the story to the child while highlighting the words.  There are SO MANY titles to choose from!  Nonfiction stories are also available.  If your family is interested in this site go to www.traer.lib.ia.us and click on the TumbleBooks icon on the left hand side.  This is a free site!

Please check with your kindergartner on the condition of his/her pencils at school.  Some need replaced!  Some pencils need to be replaced by families because the eraser is worn down or the pencil is too short. Please send pencils with erasers on them so that if your student makes a mistake he/she can easily erase it.

Daily 5 in Kindergarten!!!

In our classroom we started Daily 5. Here are some pictures of our centers.

1. Read to Self
2. Read to Someone
3. Listen to Reading
4. Work on Words
5. Work on Writing

This section is our Work on Writing. The options the students get to choose from for this center is writing a letter to someone with letter templates, writing on blank lined paper and plain typing paper about the bulletin board theme (changes weekly), or something that they are interested in. We have themed paper that matches the theme of the week, writing slips that start to prompt the students to write in their journals, pictures of 60 options of prompts to write about, and the last thing we have is sentence tracing sheets. Every week, there are three options of sentences that match the theme of the week. The students trace the sentence, write it themselves, and then draw a picture of what the sentence is about on the back.

This is our themed bulletin board that will help prompt the students to write about what we are learning that week.

This section is for Work on Words. On top the numbered containers hold the unfinished work and their journals. The options for this center are for a wide variety of learning abilities. Starting from the top left and going across there are flash cards for alphabet and sight words. The next section is a list of our sight words and high frequency words that we must learn by the end of the year. (They use these word lists for everything in this center). This also contains game boards using the sight words/high frequency words. The next section over is sight word graphs we made. The second row includes wooden letters and letter tiles to spell any word, and also letter stamps and paper. The next section includes letter magnets and cookie sheets to spell words. The third row (bottom row) includes alphabet puzzles, the next section has dry erase boards and chalk boards to write down the words on the word list or flash cards. The last section has wiki sticks and alphabet cards. Our students really enjoy the freedom to choose their activity and the varieties really help us with all the different learning abilities in the class.

This is our paper for sight word graphs. These words change every week too!

This is our listening center. We have this container that has individual books with CD's or tape players. They get to choose. In the listening center we also have a large CD/Tape player that has 6 books in a set for a group of students to listen to. We also use our 3 computers to use tumble books from our local library.

For our Read to Self and Read to Someone centers we use our chair pockets (great purchase!). Every Friday we get three new Daily 5 books and keep them in our chair pockets. It is a great way to stay organized as a class.

This is our checking for understanding cue that helps our students Read to Someone.

These are our Daily 5 cards. Every 10 minutes we ring a bell and the students move their paper clip down to the next center. This is manageable for our young students.

When we first taught each center (1 center a week), we made I-Charts and our students came up with the rules for the students and the teachers. Here is where we displayed the rules. FLY INTO THE WORLD OF DAILY 5!!!

April 5, 2012

Dear Families,

We learned the letters t and h together can make two different sounds.  They can have the voiced “th” sound like in feather and the unvoiced “th” sound like in thimble.  The voiced “th” sound makes our lips and tongue vibrate and tickle.  The kindergartners made some cute Easter bunny box decorations.  If something were to fall off, just glue it back on at home.  We reviewed some letters and practiced writing them the North Tama kindergarten way along with some sight words. The boys and girls continue to turn the eggs two times a day and wait for chicks to hatch. This is an exciting process to watch, and the eggs are scheduled to hatch shortly after Easter!  The students worked on a few Easter projects throughout the week.  On Tuesday the elementary students attended the NED assembly.  We learned that NED stands for Never give up, Encourage others, and Do your best.  The presenter told great stories with important messages while performing yo-yo tricks.

The kindergartners continued Daily 5 this week.  The boys and girls worked through each Daily 5 center everyday we were able to schedule Daily 5. Because of our crazy schedule, some days we worked in the centers longer than others.  Our goal for working with writing is ten minutes. For many, Daily 5 makes the morning or the afternoon go by really quickly!

We are in need of some supplies for Daily 5.  The students could use more individual cd players with headphones and individual tape players with headphones for listening to reading.  Colored chalk (not sidewalk chalk) is also wanted!

Please check with your kindergartner on the condition of his/her pencils at school.  Some need replaced!  Some pencils need to be replaced by families because the eraser is worn down or the pencil is too short. Please send pencils with erasers on them so that if your student makes a mistake he/she can easily erase it.

Lately many children have been forgetting their folders at home.  So many are borrowing our classroom folders that some days we are close to running out.  If you find a borrowing folder at home, please send it back.  Getting the folder into the backpack is a great way for your kindergartner to practice being responsible.

Sharing for next week is free choice.

North Tama Elementary is using a math practice website called IXL.  Kindergarten families are welcome to go online and use this website.  The address is www.ixl.com/signin/northtama.  Your child’s user name is their first initial followed by their last name.  All of these letters are lowercase.  You child’s password is your child’s initials typed in lowercase letters.  For example, if your child’s name is John Smith, his username would be jsmith, and his password would be js. This is a great tool and easy to use!!! At each questions there is an option to have the computer speak to you. You also get prizes when you reach the goals!!! Try it, it’s great! Another great website for literacy is www.starfall.com. This website gives students many different ways to learn and read!

Our new goal is to have 4 days in a row without any YELLOWS.  Check with your kindergartner on how close we are to reaching the new goal. (There is a chance that we meet this goal this week after this newsletter is printed, copied, and stapled.)

Soon Mrs. Turner will be sending home another Scholastic book order.  This is a great way to start a summer library, and we encourage all of our students to read throughout the summer!  Notice the due date on the form and return it on time.  Please send checks with the book order instead of cash and make the checks out to Scholastic.

Please put extra socks in your student’s backpack.  Kids that wear sandals and flip flops to school like to wear socks with their gym shoes to p.e.

There will be no school on Friday, April 6th.

On April 18th the students are dismissed at 12:50 for professional development.  There is no school for students on Wednesday, May 9th.

Round up week will be April 30th – May 4th.  Kindergarten students stay home that week so that we can get to know the future kindergartners.  Please mark your calendars and arrange for child care that week.

VIP Days (formerly known as Grandparent Days) have been scheduled for May 10th and 11th.  Your child will get to invite special guests to come to school and watch a short program in the classroom, enjoy a special snack, and check out our room and school.  Students may invite grandparents and/or special friends to attend.  The guests choose which day they will attend.  Invitations will go home later.  A rsvp note will also go home later.  Families will need to fill that note out and send it back to school so that we have enough chairs and snacks ready!

Enjoy this 3 day weekend!
