May 11, 2012

Dear Families,

This week the kindergartners learned the combinations ar, or, and er.  These are the last new sounds that we learn in kindergarten.  We learned several new words.  This week we are sending home the rest of the sight and high frequency word flashcards.  We want the students to practice, practice, practice so that they can all get great grades on their report cards.  The kindergartners worked on report card evaluations.  They practiced the songs for our VIP program.  The boys and girls had a lot of fun making no bake cookies and graham cracker treats to serve on our VIP Days.  The no bake cookie recipe is attached to the newsletter so that you can make them at home.  It was fun to meet our VIP guests on Thursday and Friday!

Please check with your kindergartner on the condition of his/her pencils at school.  Some really need to be replaced!  Some pencils need to be replaced by families because the eraser is worn down or the pencil is too short. Please send pencils with erasers on them so that if your student makes a mistake he/she can easily erase it.

For the rest of the year sharing is free choice.

The kindergartners continue to work with the green, yellow, and right light system.  We start every day on green.  (Green is great!)  If the class is loud or isn’t following directions as a group, the green will turn to yellow.  (Yellow is a warning.)  If the boys and girls work hard and begin listening and following directions we can move back to a green.  If they do not, we move to red.  (Red is BAD!)  If the kindergartners get to red, they eat snack silently.  If they get two in a day, they eat snack silently AND put their heads down on their tables for a few minutes. Our goal again is to have 5 days in a row without any YELLOWS.  Check with your kindergartner on how close we are to reaching the new goal.  Recently our classroom has been noisier because the students are chatting with their friends during work time and in line basics.

Please put extra socks in your student’s backpack.  Kids that wear sandals and flip flops to school like to wear socks with their gym shoes to p.e.

Next Wednesday the kindergartners are going down to the Traer Public Library.  The librarians show us around the beautiful building and read us some fantastic stories.  We encourage our students to patronize the public libraries during the summer as well as during the school year.

Check out the information sent home before round up concerning track and field day.  The kindergartners participate in three events.  We go outside for our events and then return back to our room.  We do not stay outside all day like the older students do.  Since we are not outside all day, we do not want the kindergartners to bring beach towels or water bottles.  That is a lot of stuff to organize!
The kindergartners are able to earn three different awards at the end of the year.  The children will get an award if they are able to identify all of the letters (capital and lowercase) and count to 100.  They can get an outstanding attendance award if they have missed 0, 1, or 2 days of school and have been tardy 2 or fewer times.

The end of kindergarten is drawing near.  Can you believe it?  We can’t!
